My impression so far of the V-class MP
Please see below my impression of the V-class MP following a couple of visits to the showroom and two test drives (Feb 2015).
EXTERIOR
Personally I like the styling - bold, classy.
Tinted windows are properly tinted.
Rather long length, would be nicer on standard length body, but then would be short on interior space.
I didn't see a pricelist option to de-badge the rear.
MB grill emblem is sufficient (bonnet badge over fussy).
Fog lamps are not an option on the MP at this time (possible on regular V-class and ACTIVITY).
INTERIOR - FRONT
Creaky dash / creaky rear side trim panels. I would have preferred a more solid, simple dash / trim design.
Comand controller unit quality good, except the volume control.
Heating etc. controls quality not convincing.
Access to rear from the front unnecessarily limited due to dashboard design.
Seat back angle adjusters difficult to access (manual seats).
Seat bases rather short in length.
No cup holders (bottle pockets in doors).
Glove-box is quite small although the horizontal divider can apparently be easily removed.
INTERIOR - REAR
Westfalia furniture seems well made, but perhaps not optimized for space.
Sink could have been bigger (too low anyway for me, use a plastic bowl on top of the sink).
I like that the powered roof is optional.
I like the three step interior lights.
Not convinced the night blinds will do their job properly.
Chair storage in the rear door would have been nice (like Cali - patented by VW?), MB solution takes up too much boot space.
Reflection - I think I would immediately cover the glass panels with removable sticky plastic sheeting to protect them.
Reflection - would be more versatile if the bed consisted of individual seats. Would require a split rear shelf solution and 4 rails of course.
OPERATION (based on regular V-class, not Marco Polo)
V 220 CDI Auto - drives well (steering, handling, comfort), power OK.
Brakes perhaps a little soft (VW/Audi often rather aggressive).
Auto box nice (VW/Audi DSG can be a little jerky).
Manual gearbox rather agricultural.
Comand controller not very intuitive - perhaps just needs practice...
Audio 20 radio sound quality seemed poor with known quality MP3 on USB.
The rear seat moves OK if a bit heavy. Electric operation works OK although the showroom model needed some realignment (described in handbook).
Not tested (not possible) - manual roof operation, cupboards, sink, hob, fridge.
OVERALL
Sadly, I was not convinced that it was the right time to buy this vehicle. Despite the V-class base vehicle being on the market for a while, I am not convinced there are not teething problems and some quality issues may yet be resolved. Concerning the MP Westfalia equipment, it seems of good quality and should not present any significant problems (if not functionally optimized).
I am aware that the competition is not perfect either.
I probably need to actually test a vehicle longer term to see if it's really for me!
I am certainly keeping this vehicle in mind as a possible purchase.
